Team Kenya concluded its residential training camp on Wednesday at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, ahead of the World Athletics Relays Championships set for May 10–11 in Guangzhou, China.
The squad began their preparations just two days after the national trials held on April 11–12, with additional endurance sessions conducted at Karura Forest on select mornings.
The team is scheduled to depart this evening via Doha, with their arrival in China expected Thursday afternoon.
Head coach Stanley Towet expressed confidence in the team’s readiness, citing significant progress during the training period.
“From the onset, training has been smooth, and the improvement is clear. When we started, some athletes were running the 120m sprint in over 12 seconds—now they’re down to 11.5. That gives us hope for a strong performance in the 4x100m,” said Towet.
He noted that while most of the technical work has been covered, the team will hold light sessions in China to adjust to the time difference and climate.
“Relays demand about a month of preparation to perfect baton exchanges, especially in the 4x100m. Still, the athletes’ individual form is encouraging,” he added.
Towet highlighted standout performances from both men’s and women’s 4x400m squads, with three men clocking 44 seconds over 400m and three women posting 51-second finishes this season. “We’re optimistic about qualifying for the World Championships in both the 4x400m and mixed relays,” he said.
Among the early arrivals in China are Commonwealth Games 100m champion Ferdinand Omanyala, Olympian Zablon Ekwam, and coach Simon Riga, who form part of the advance team.
However, the team will miss the services of world 800m champion Mary Moraa, who was unable to secure a visa in time for the event.
