President William Ruto has congratulated Kenya’s men’s 3,000m steeplechase team after the country secured all three medals in the event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
In a statement shared on social media, the Head of State described the achievement as a proud moment for the nation, saying the podium sweep further underlined Kenya’s long-standing dominance in the discipline.
“A magnificent podium sweep by Kenya’s men’s 3,000m steeplechase team at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, is a proud moment for our nation,” Ruto said.
He singled out Edmund Serem for leading the clean sweep after winning the gold medal, while congratulating Simon Kiprop Koech and Leonard Kipkemoi Bett for clinching silver and bronze respectively.
“Congratulations to Edmund Serem for leading Kenya to a dominant victory and further cementing our unrivalled legacy in the event. Well done to Simon Kiprop Koech and Leonard Kipkemoi Bett for securing second and third places respectively,” he added.
According to the official results, Serem won the race in 8:18.23, edging Koech, who finished in 8:18.59, while Bett completed the Kenyan podium in 8:21.63. The trio kept New Zealand’s reigning world champion Geordie Beamish off the medals after he finished fourth.
The victory extended Kenya’s rich tradition in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase, an event in which the country has produced multiple Olympic, World Championship and Commonwealth Games champions over the decades.
Ruto thanked the athletes for bringing honour to the country, saying their performance had once again made Kenyans proud.
“We are proud of your outstanding achievement and the honour you have brought to our nation. Asanteni sana,” the president said.
