The Affordable Housing Board has announced the final verification and signing of sale agreements for 1,080 studio units at the Mukuru Kwa Reuben Social Housing Project, marking a significant milestone in the government’s affordable housing agenda.

President William Ruto is expected to preside over the official handover ceremony scheduled for next week.

Originally slated for completion in December 2024, the first phase of the project faced delays due to legal challenges surrounding the Housing Levy. However, the board has confirmed that the units are now ready for occupancy.

Deputy Chairperson Mary of the Affordable Housing Board noted that despite the setbacks, the project has remained on course, with verification and legal sensitization exercises currently ongoing for prospective homeowners at the site.“The project demonstrates our commitment to ensuring decent, affordable, and secure housing for all, especially those from informal settlements like Mukuru Kwa Njenga,” she said.

The Mukuru Social Housing Project spans 56 acres and comprises a total of 13,248 units. These include 5,616 bedsitters, 3,024 one-bedroom units, and 4,608 two-bedroom units, designed to accommodate a wide range of household needs.

The initiative prioritizes the relocation of residents from informal settlements into formal housing, offering a pathway to improved living conditions, security of tenure, and access to essential services.

The handover next week will see the first batch of 1,080 beneficiaries receive keys to their new homes, marking a crucial step in the broader rollout of Kenya’s affordable housing programme.
