Two nurses arrested at Ngara Medical Center in Nairobi have been charged after allegedly assaulting police officers investigating the clinic’s licenses.

Jonah Kipsiror Marori and Ephraim Mwaura Karumbi are accused of operating the facility without proper licenses and assaulting officers with acid.

Marori faces allegations that, on Monday last week, he caused grievous harm to Police Constables Tom Mbuku, Joyce Otieno, and Moses Lelei at Ngara Road Medical Centre, inflicting bodily harm with acid.

In addition to assault, the nurses are charged with running an unlicensed pharmacy and possessing Part 1 poisons at an unregistered premises.

The accused denied all charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Ben-Mark Ekhubi.

The prosecution informed the court that while they did not oppose the nurses’ release on bail, they recommended bond with surety, rather than cash bail.

The officers suffered acid burns.

The court was told that the police officers sustained chemical burns on their faces, hands, and ribs due to the assault.

The court granted Marori a bond of Sh 600,000 with one surety of the same amount, while Karumbi was granted a bond of Sh 300,000 or an alternative cash bail of Sh 200,000.

The pre-trial hearing is scheduled for January 16 next year.
