Ministry of Sports to Launch Nationwide Grassroots Tournament — The President’s Cup
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has announced plans to introduce a new nationwide grassroots football tournament dubbed the President’s Cup, designed to nurture talent from the county level to the national stage.
The announcement was made on Tuesday morning during a breakfast reception hosted at State House, Nairobi, held in honour of Kenya Police FC and Kenya Police Bullets FC for winning the FKF Premier League and FKF Women’s Premier League, respectively.
CS Mvurya noted that the upcoming tournament will serve as a key platform for talent identification and development across the country.
“To expand opportunities for talent growth, we are preparing to launch the President’s Cup — a competition that will begin at the county level, proceed to regional playoffs, and culminate in a national final that will be presided over by His Excellency the President, in line with his vision,” said Mvurya.
The format of the President’s Cup is expected to closely follow the successful model of the 2023 Talanta Hela tournament, led by former Sports CS Ababu Namwamba.
That edition featured grassroots competitions across counties, ultimately producing national champions, with Homa Bay and Busia taking top honours in the boys’ and girls’ categories, respectively.
CS Mvurya also reaffirmed the government’s broader commitment to the development of sports infrastructure nationwide.
He highlighted ongoing stadium renovations and emphasized the significance of the Talanta City legacy project as a transformative initiative in the sector.
“We continue to invest heavily in upgrading sports facilities. I’m confident this will be a historic period for Kenyan sports, particularly with the introduction of Talanta City, which represents a bold, new framework for sports development in the country,” he added.
