On Wednesday, business was almost completely at a standstill in the Nairobi Central Business District due to the massive crowds of mourners who took to the streets following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.
The huge crowd of heartfelt supporters, majority of them from Kibera, the constituency that Odinga had represented, marched from the slum towards the city centre singing praises and carrying placards with his pictures. The long procession caused major traffic jams along the city’s main roads intersections.
Mourners said Odinga was the champion of human and social rights and a unifying leader whose political struggle for decades shaped Kenya’s democracy. For them, this is the end of the era with the passing of the man who was justice and equality.
