Leaders in the Mt. Kenya region are starting to resist intimidation and threats from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, with some publicly expressing their views.

Kiruga Thuku, the MCA for Chinga Ward in Nyeri County, is one of the few who are challenging Gachagua’s attacks on President William Ruto’s administration.

Following Gachagua’s recent remarks attacking Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja for allegedly failing to return favours, Kiruga has responded forcefully.

Gachagua claimed he had helped Kanja, who is also from Nyeri, secure the top police position, but that Kanja had since withdrawn his security detail and ignored his calls.

Kiruga sharply criticized Gachagua, emphasizing that police leaders are not as easily influenced as politicians.

“For those who believe they can control everything—who becomes MP, MCA, or who leads where—it’s important to understand that this kind of interference doesn’t extend to leaders in the disciplined forces,” Kiruga said.

He added, “In their line of duty, loyalty follows a different set of rules. If any leader in the disciplined forces even remotely suspects that your actions could compromise their oath of office or loyalty to their Commander-in-Chief, they won’t engage with you,”.

Kiruga also reminded Gachagua to stay in his lane, saying;

“Whether or not you helped them get their jobs, their primary loyalty is to the nation, not to disgruntled politicians. Politicians must realize they can’t control everything, especially when it comes to tampering with the careers of security leaders.”
