Former Kenya Simbas Rugby Player Joshua Weru

Joshua Weru, a 23 year old former Kenya Simbas rugby player, has made as the first Kenyan and East African to sign with the National Football League (NFL) Philadelphia Eagles through the International Player Pathway Programme (IPP).

Weru, who stands 6’4” and weighs 244 pounds, draped the Kenyan flag proudly during his signing ceremony, standing while holding the Eagles’ iconic helmet- a moment that symbolizes personal triumph and also it served as a breakthrough for African representation in American football.

He will play on the defensive line, having been added as a developmental prospect alongside Nigerian teammate Uar Bernard, after the Eagles drafted eight players.

The NFL’s International Player Pathway was created to expand opportunities for talented athletes from outside the United States a chance to compete at the highest level.

The historic moment shows that Kenya can prove to the world it has talent that can surpass in sports like athletics and rugby.

His journey has been extraordinary, from training in Kenya to reaching the world of American football, making his determination inspire many.

Signing the contract could open doors for more careers to pursue in the NFL, expanding the continent’s footprint in global sports, say sports analysts.
