Mediheal Hospital has strongly denied allegations of involvement in illegal organ transplants following the release of a report by the Independent Investigative Committee on Tissue and Organ Transplant Services.

Speaking in Nairobi, the hospital’s founder, Dr. Swarup Mishra, claimed the facility has not yet received an official copy of the report, which recommends criminal investigations against him and three other senior doctors at the hospital.

“We are yet to receive the official report from the Ministry of Health. We do clean business and are fully compliant with the law,” said Dr. Mishra, maintaining that the committee is unfairly targeting Mediheal despite the hospital’s commitment to upholding high medical standards.

The report, handed to Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale on July 22, implicates Dr. Mishra, Nephrologist Dr. A. S. Murthy, Urologist Dr. Sananda Bag, and Anaesthesiologist Dr. Vijay Kumar in alleged illegal transplant activities.

The committee flagged concerns around questionable consent procedures, poor follow-up care, and cash payment irregularities at the facility.

According to the report, Mediheal performs the majority of kidney transplants in the country and serves as a recruitment hub for both local and international patients.

However, it also identified worrying trends in documentation and ethical oversight. In its defense, the hospital said it provided all the required documentation during the investigation and insists the accusations are baseless.

Mediheal’s legal representative, Katwa Kigen, reiterated the hospital’s demand for a formal copy of the report from the Ministry of Health.

The committee has called for urgent reforms in the organ transplant sector, including improved documentation and stronger ethical oversight, to protect patients and ensure accountability in the growing field of organ transplantation.
