An aggregate of 1,019 tourists entered the Port of Mombasa via MV Azamara, demonstrating that the cruise tourism sector in Kenya is still flourishing. The vessel arrived early Monday carrying 630 passengers and 389 crew members from Port Victoria in Seychelles and is expected to head to Zanzibar after its port call in Kenya.
The majority of the tourists are pensioners who have been attracted by the serene nature of Kenya as well as its opportunities for relaxation and adventure.
They plan to spend two days sightseeing at various tourist sites and in the process, they will give a boost to the local tourism and hospitality sectors.
In 2024, cruise tourism in Kenya witnessed a 140 percent increase and the Kenya Tourism Board expects this upward trajectory to continue this year as well.
According to the Board, six additional cruise ships will be arriving at the Port of Mombasa during the first half of 2026.
The officials who welcomed the tourists at the port urged the government to reconsider the charges and levies imposed on cruise tourists so as to make Kenya more competitive and attractive as a destination.
They also highlighted the importance of upgrading security measures to attract more international cruise liners and to build the confidence of visitors.
