Government Spokesperson Dr. Isaac Mwaura on Monday moved to assure residents of Kakamega County that the recently announced Sh683 billion gold discovery in Isulu–Bushiangala will deliver tangible benefits to the community.

Speaking during the Western Region Media Projects Tour, Dr. Mwaura said Kenya’s mining laws provide a clear revenue-sharing formula that guarantees local gains—70 per cent to the national government, 20 per cent to Kakamega County and 10 per cent to the host community.

He added that the mining firm will also be required to invest 1 per cent of its annual gross sales in community development initiatives, to be overseen by a 14-member local committee. Priority areas include roads, schools, health centres, water supply and environmental conservation.

He further assured residents that no one will be displaced without compensation, noting that government teams are already managing the process. Dr. Mwaura said the measures are meant to ensure the project proceeds transparently while supporting economic growth and local development.

During the briefing, the Government Spokesperson highlighted the Kenya Kwanza administration’s wider agenda to promote equitable socio-economic progress across the country. He said ongoing programmes are aimed at reducing poverty, creating jobs and improving livelihoods through investments in infrastructure, agriculture, education, trade and other key sectors.

In the Western region—covering Kakamega, Bungoma, Vihiga and Busia—Dr. Mwaura said more than 77 major projects are underway. These include gold processing facilities, roads, bridges, airstrips, modern markets, affordable housing units, water systems, industrial parks and energy projects. He noted that the media tour is intended to showcase these developments and foster greater community awareness and ownership.
