The Kidongo Fish Landing Site in Mombasa County has reached 88 percent completion, marking a significant milestone under the Kenya Marine Fisheries and Socio-economic Development Project (KEMFSED) as the government steps up efforts to strengthen the Blue Economy and improve livelihoods for coastal communities.
According to Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, the modern facility is designed to transform fisheries operations through improved fish handling, processing, storage and marketing infrastructure.
The landing site includes a state-of-the-art fish handling and processing facility equipped with cold storage and ice-making infrastructure. It also features a social hall, a power house and protective works aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, safety and long-term durability.
Construction of the project has already generated employment opportunities while stimulating economic activity in the surrounding community.
“The project continues to create employment opportunities and stimulate local economic activity during its implementation phase.” said Omollo
Once completed and operational, the facility is expected to reduce post-harvest losses, improve fish preservation and expand market access for fisherfolk. These improvements are projected to increase incomes while strengthening the fisheries value chain along Kenya’s coastline.
Omollo said the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration continues to support the project’s implementation by enhancing maritime security and coordinating administration across coastal and water-border areas, creating a secure environment for sustainable fisheries development, investment and continued growth of Kenya’s Blue Economy.
