President William Ruto has appointed bishop Margaret Wanjiru as the new chairperson of the Nairobi Rivers Commission and former nominated Senator Millicent Omanga as member of the commission.

The announcement was made via a Gazette Notice dated October 25, 2024.

Wanjiru, former Starehe MP replaces Pamela Olet as the head of the Commission while Omanga takes over the position previously held by former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, whose appointment faced legal challenges.

These appointments coincide with a restructuring, as the commission transitions under the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, moving from its previous location within the Office of the President.

Both Wanjiru and Omanga were previously appointed as Chief Administrative Secretaries (CAS) in the Ministries of Interior and Cooperatives, respectively.

Their prior positions were however rendered null and void by the courts.

President Ruto launched the Nairobi Rivers Commission in February 2023 to oversee the revitalization of the Nairobi River.
