The hearing of the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in the Senate has started.

In a special sitting convened on the morning of Wednesday, October 9, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi began by reading to the House the letter he received from the National Assembly on the resolve by the MPs to impeach Gachagua.

During the sitting, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot moved the impeachment motion and proposed the establishment of a Special Committee of 11 members to investigate the charges against Gachagua.

However, Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna declined to second the motion to form a special committee, meaning the hearing will be done in plenary.

After hearing the charges and voting, if at least Two-Thirds of the Senate Members—comprising 67 total, including 47 elected and 20 nominated—vote to uphold any impeachment charges, the Deputy President shall cease to hold office, as specified in Article 145 (7)
