President William Ruto has been elected the new Chairperson of the East African Community (EAC), succeeding South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir.
The announcement was made today following an election held among the Heads of State of the seven EAC member countries: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, and Somalia.
President Ruto’s appointment was made during the ongoing 24th EAC Heads of State Summit in Arusha, Tanzania.
In his address at the summit on Saturday, President Ruto reaffirmed Kenya’s dedication to advancing the region’s integration efforts.

He also emphasized the importance of establishing a political confederation within East Africa to further strengthen ties among the member states.
While recognizing the significant strides made in enhancing bilateral relations, President Ruto called for greater cooperation in tackling the region’s existing challenges.
