The new Mombasa commuter rail train system will start operation later this month ending months of delays. The 17 kilometer railway system will link travelers disembarking from the Miritini SGR station to Mombasa central railway station which has also undergone major rehabilitation.
The Kenya Railway Company says, commuters will choose between Park and Ride or the Drop and Ride’ option.The newly completed project features two modern passenger stations in Mombasa Town and Miritini, a 2.3-kilometre ocean-spanning railway bridge at Makupa, and the revitalization of 16.6 kilometers of Metre Gauge Railway all part of a broader strategy to improve commuter efficiency and urban logistics.
The MCRS will serve as a last-mile transit link for passengers using the Madaraka Express, ensuring a smoother transition between regional and city transport.
Two additional stations are also planned in Changamwe East and West, underscoring the project’s long-term expansion and citywide integrationThe new system incorporates Park & Ride and Drop & Ride facilities, with parking for over 100 vehicles.
At launch, the service is projected to serve over 1,000 commuters per day — a figure expected to grow as service awareness and urban demand increase.
