The Ministry of Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has rebuked the former deputy president over his remarks, linking the government to the resurgence of illicit brew in the Mt Kenya region.

Speaking at a church service on Sunday, Gachagua insensitively claimed President William Ruto had ordered illicit alcohol to be distributed to Mt Kenya youths to depopulate them for political reasons.

However, Omollo said the problem of substance misuse affects people from all walks of life, including parents. The recent case is three deaths recorded in Nakuru after the victims took suspected counterfeit brew.

The PS regretted that Gachagua was trivialising such grave national matters without empathy for the families that may be struggling with this crisis.

He insisted that the government, in every part of the country, including Mt Kenya, is committed to fighting illicit alcohol.

"While it is clear for every citizen to see that this is a selfish politically motivated inflammatory statement, it is also obvious that the government does not produce, distribute nor retail any alcoholic drinks. Insinuating that any executive can direct the sale of any alcohol, whether poisonous or not is mischievous and misconceived and would amount to illegality," said Omollo.

Omollo challenged Gachagua to make official complaints and present evidence that the government is behind the crisis.
