Meru Town is set for a major road upgrade at a cost of Sh3.7 billion as the government moves to improve infrastructure ahead of the town’s planned elevation to city status.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki said the road works were part of a wider infrastructure programme being implemented across Meru County.
Kindiki made the announcement on Friday, September 11, 2026, while addressing residents of Kanyakine Township in Imenti South Constituency.
“The road network within Meru Town is set for significant upgrade at a cost of 3.7 billion shillings, as the Municipality races towards city status,” Kindiki said.
The Deputy President said the government had also resumed construction of roads across the country after paying contractor bills amounting to Sh177 billion.
According to Kindiki, the payments have allowed works to resume on about 6,000 kilometres of roads that had stalled for years due to lack of funding.
In Meru County, nearly 500 kilometres of roads are currently being tarmacked at an estimated cost of Sh39 billion.
Kindiki said road upgrades were also underway in other urban centres across the county, including Nkubu, Mitunguu, Maua, Kianjai and Timau.
The government has been pushing to improve Meru’s infrastructure as part of plans to elevate the town to city status.
President William Ruto had earlier announced plans to upgrade Meru to a city, with major road projects among the developments expected to support the transformation.
Kindiki also highlighted other projects underway in the county, including the upgrade of Meru Level 5 Hospital to a Level 6 National Teaching and Referral Hospital.
He said construction works at the hospital had reached 70 per cent.
The government is also constructing 21 fresh produce markets in the county, including the Gakoromone Market, while last-mile electricity projects are expected to connect an additional 27,000 households.
Kindiki said the projects formed part of the government’s wider development agenda for Imenti South and Meru County.
