Kenya Airways Cargo has completed its first shipment of live cattle from Kenya to Nigeria, transporting more than 50 animals from Nairobi to Lagos in a dedicated charter flight.
The operation, completed on October 27, 2026, departed from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and landed at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, marking a milestone in the airline’s specialised cargo services.
The shipment was handled under the airline’s KQ Live product, which provides specialised transportation for live animals through appropriate handling procedures and environmental controls. These include temperature regulation and ventilation measures designed to support animal welfare during transit.
Kenya Airways Cargo Director Fitsum Abadi said the successful operation demonstrated the airline’s ability to meet complex cargo requirements across Africa.
He noted that transporting live animals requires careful planning, specialised handling and coordination throughout the journey to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
The maiden charter forms part of Kenya Airways’ strategy to expand its cargo business by targeting specialised freight markets beyond conventional goods.
Other targeted segments include pharmaceuticals, perishables, dangerous goods and e-commerce shipments, which require specific handling capabilities and regulatory compliance.
The airline expects its expanding cargo capacity and strategic partnerships to support growth in these markets, diversify revenue streams and improve cargo yields.
The Nairobi-Lagos operation also highlights opportunities for specialised air transport to strengthen trade links between East and West Africa, particularly for goods requiring controlled handling and timely delivery.
