President William Ruto has nominated John Cox Lorionokou as the Registrar of Political Parties and Agatha Wanjiku Wahome as the Assistant Registrar.

The nominations were formally communicated to the National Assembly on Tuesday by Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.

He said the names had been submitted in line with Section 34A and the Sixth Schedule of the Political Parties Act, together with the Public Appointments (Parliamentary Approval) Act.

The nominees will now undergo vetting by the National Assembly’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC), which is expected to conduct approval hearings before tabling a report in the House for debate and decision.

“Honourable Members, Standing Order 45 provides that, upon receipt of notification of a nomination for appointment, such nomination shall stand committed to the relevant Departmental Committee. In this regard, I hereby refer the Message from His Excellency the President, together with the curriculum vitae and testimonials of the nominees, to the Committee for consideration,” directed the Speaker.

If approved, the two will take over the leadership of the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties, a key institution mandated to regulate and oversee political parties in Kenya.
