Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has eulogised former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo as a pivotal figure who fundamentally shaped Kenya’s 1992 General Election and the country’s political history.

In a condolence message, Mwaura described Jirongo as a powerful political mobiliser whose influence during the reintroduction of multiparty politics left a lasting imprint on Kenya’s electoral landscape.

“Cyrus Jirongo helped shape the 1992 general elections in a fundamental way,” Mwaura said, recalling how Kenyans even nicknamed the KSh500 note “Jirongo” during the period, reflecting the intense political mobilisation that characterised the era.

Mwaura noted that Jirongo, then the leader of the Youth for KANU ’92 (YK’92) lobby group, played a central role in President Daniel arap Moi’s re-election, defeating opposition favourite Kenneth Matiba at the height of Kenya’s political transition.

He further recounted personal memories of the period, including how KANU-branded campaign materials flooded even opposition strongholds, underscoring the reach and effectiveness of Jirongo’s political machinery.

“Although we lived in a predominantly FORD Asili zone, our rural home was flooded with white T-shirts bearing the red KANU cockerel symbol,” Mwaura recalled.

According to the Government Spokesperson, Jirongo’s political career later evolved beyond behind-the-scenes mobilisation, seeing him rise to become a legislator, Cabinet minister, and presidential candidate.

Mwaura said he later interacted with Jirongo personally after joining politics, describing him as jovial, outspoken, and unafraid to share his views on national issues.

“He was always lively and talkative, never shying away from expressing his thoughts,” he said.
