Lionel Messi and Inter Miami were held to a 0-0 draw by Egyptian giants Al Ahly in the opening match of FIFA’s new 32-team tournament, played in front of 60,927 fans at Florida’s Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday.
Messi came close to snatching a stoppage-time winner, but his curling shot was brilliantly tipped onto the crossbar by Al Ahly keeper Mohamed El Shenawy.
The Egyptian side also had their chances, missing a first-half penalty from Trezeguet, saved by Miami’s Oscar Ustari.
Despite the lack of goals, the match delivered drama and intensity. Al Ahly dominated early, with Palestine striker Wessam Abou Ali threatening twice.
Miami improved in the second half, with Messi nearly scoring from a free kick before being denied again at the death.
The match ran smoothly off the pitch as well, easing concerns over attendance and security. Over 10,000 Al Ahly fans created a vibrant atmosphere, giving the game a feel of being played in Cairo.
Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano was optimistic: “We showed in the second half we can compete with anyone.” Al Ahly coach Jose Riveiro lamented missed chances but praised the fans: “It felt like we were playing at home.”
Miami next face Porto in Atlanta on Thursday before hosting Palmeiras.
