Deputy President Kithure Kindiki

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has signalled a shift in tone ahead of the 2027 elections, calling for unity and reconciliation while acknowledging growing political competition around the deputy presidency.

Speaking on Wednesday, April 1, in the Mount Kenya East region, Kindiki described the Deputy President’s office as temporary, noting that leadership positions should not divide leaders.

“So long as I am in this office, I will work tirelessly for the people of Embu and for all Kenyans. Because matters of the world, matters of office, and matters of leadership are only temporary — they are not permanent. The time will come when even we shall leave.” He said.

His remarks come amid speculation over whether he will be retained as President William Ruto’s running mate in the next general election.

Kindiki emphasised the need for unity among leaders from the region, urging them to avoid political infighting that could weaken their influence ahead of 2027.

At the same time, the Deputy President said he has unconditionally forgiven his critics, in remarks that have stirred fresh debate about a possible political rapprochement with his predecessor Rigathi Gachagua.

The comments mark a notable shift from earlier hardline positions, with analysts interpreting the messaging as an attempt to ease tensions within the Mount Kenya political bloc while consolidating support.

Kindiki, who assumed office in 2024 following Gachagua’s impeachment, has in previous statements maintained that the deputy presidency is “not up for negotiation.”

However, his latest remarks acknowledging the fluid nature of political positions have added a new dimension to the debate over his future.

The Deputy President’s statements also come against the backdrop of heightened political realignments, with leaders positioning themselves for the 2027 contest amid shifting alliances within the Kenya Kwanza coalition and the opposition.

Political observers note that the Mount Kenya region remains a critical battleground, with ongoing efforts by various leaders to consolidate influence likely to shape the choice of a running mate.

Kindiki’s call for unity and forgiveness is now being seen as part of a broader strategy to stabilise his political base while navigating intensifying competition for the deputy presidency.
