Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, Hon. Aden Duale, today held discussions with the Swedish Ambassador to Kenya, Ms. Caroline Vicini, on bilateral cooperation in carbon markets under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement.

The meeting, held at the Ministry’s headquarters, focused on advancing Kenya’s carbon trading framework and climate action efforts.

Hon. Duale briefed the ambassador on the status of the proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two governments, set to be signed in May 2025.

The agreement will strengthen collaboration on Kenya’s nascent carbon markets, paving the way for structured and transparent emissions trading.

The Cabinet Secretary also sought Swedish technical and financial support for the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) to fully operationalize the Designated National Authority (DNA) and facilitate the rollout of carbon trading in Kenya.

This support is expected to enhance Kenya’s capacity to implement carbon offset projects, attract investment, and achieve its climate targets under the Paris Agreement.

Kenya has positioned itself as a leader in climate change mitigation and adaptation, with carbon markets seen as a crucial tool for reducing emissions and promoting sustainable development.

Sweden, a strong advocate for global climate action, has been a key partner in supporting Kenya’s environmental sustainability initiatives.

The discussions mark an important step toward formalizing cooperation, with the upcoming MoU expected to unlock new opportunities in carbon trading and climate finance for both nations.
