Pope Francis is continuing his recovery after a month-long hospitalization for pneumonia in both lungs, the Vatican confirmed on Friday. Although still receiving respiratory support, the 88-year-old pontiff is no longer in critical condition and is showing positive signs of improvement.
The Pope has been at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome since February 14, where he receives help with his breathing, using a nasal cannula during the day and an oxygen mask at night. On Thursday, he underwent physiotherapy as part of his treatment plan to aid in his recovery.
Despite his ongoing health challenges, Pope Francis marked a special occasion this week by tasting a cake in celebration of his 12th anniversary as Pope. In addition, he continued his daily spiritual practices by praying and performing his breathing exercises.
The Vatican’s press office announced they would release another update later in the evening, but hinted that daily medical updates might be reduced as his condition stabilizes. While speculation about when the Pope will return home continues, his extended hospital stay has raised concerns about his ability to carry out the duties of his papacy. However, the Vatican assured that his recovery, though slow, is progressing.
“The recovery of an 88-year-old with bilateral pneumonia takes time, requiring both physical and energy restoration,” the press office explained.
