A joint operation involving officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Kenya Police Service (KPS) in Lang’ata Sub- County has led to the arrest of Stephen Magero, who is alleged to have defrauded a Pakistani national in a fraudulent gold scam.

Magero was apprehended at Sultan Suites, Ngong View Estate, following investigations into a complaint by the foreign national, who claimed to have been conned out of USD 34,800.

According to investigators, the suspect presented the victim with 500 grams of counterfeit gold, for which he received the full amount in cash.

However, subsequent testing confirmed the gold was fake, prompting the complainant to file a report at Karen Police Station.

A search at the suspect’s premises uncovered:

  • 10 bars of suspected fake gold
  • Business cards bearing the name John Mbalaka
  • A MacBook Pro laptop
  • Smelting equipment and related apparatus
  • A mining certificate registered under Chawanda Minerals
  • A weighing machine
  • Two plastic boxes containing sand
  • Several assorted documents and files

The suspect is currently in police custody and is expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.
