Residents of Imani Estate in Ruiru, Kiambu County have appealed to the government to step in urgently and ensure their safety after they raised alarms regarding an unconfirmed plan to demolish their houses.
According to the residents, unidentified masked men who were allegedly goons have been seen recently in the area with surveyors, which has escalated the fear of demolitions. About 1, 000 families in the estate have expressed their anxiety over the safety of their homes and belongings.
The residents, led by their chairman Kamande Ndungu, mentioned that the supposed illegal land grabbing is going on even though there is a High Court stay order that keeps the situation unchanged until the issue is fully settled. They also cautioned that any demolition would be illegal and a contempt of court.
The land that is the subject of the dispute and is worth over Sh10 billion was at first owned by the family of the late James Kanyotu and currently, there is a succession case in the High Court regarding it.
Determination of the case is pending.
The residents, therefore, request the national government, the Kiambu County administration, and the security agencies to come to their rescue to enforce the court order and protect them from any form of intimidation as the legal process continues.
