Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused the government of orchestrating an assassination attempt against him during a chaotic funeral in Limuru, Kiambu County, on Thursday, November 28.

Speaking on NTV Sunday evening, Gachagua detailed how quick-thinking youth and his team shielded him from the attackers, potentially saving his life.

Gachagua described the attack as a “carefully planned scheme” to harm him, citing a series of suspicious actions leading up to the incident.

According to Gachagua, the plot began with the withdrawal of his official security detail. He claimed officers assigned to his Karen home and personal detail were gradually reassigned, leaving him vulnerable.

“The government deliberately removed my security to expose me. It was no coincidence that, on the day of the funeral, there was no visible police presence despite prior notifications,” Gachagua alleged.

The chaos erupted when masked individuals armed with stones, sticks, and other weapons stormed the venue, targeting his tent.

Gachagua recounted how the attackers dismantled the metal tent structure while shouting in Kikuyu, “Hit him on the head.”

“I was surrounded by youth and some members of my team who formed a human shield around me. They saved my life,” he said, adding that one of his protectors sustained a head injury during the melee.

Gachagua claimed he became suspicious of a plot when a local legislator opted to sit away from the main dais and was frequently seen on the phone.

“The area MP for Limuru deliberately distanced himself from us, choosing to sit elsewhere. Shortly after, chaos erupted,” he said.

Despite the escalating violence, Gachagua alleged that police officers who were reportedly aware of the attack plans failed to intervene.

As the situation spiraled, members of the public played a critical role in his escape. They ushered Gachagua to his car, covered him in the back seat, and whisked him away under a barrage of projectiles.

“I owe my safety to the youth who shielded me and ensured I left the venue unharmed. Their bravery is commendable,” he said.

The former DP expressed disappointment at what he described as a “state-sponsored” attack but vowed not to be intimidated.

“This was a shameful moment for the government, but I will not be silenced. I will continue standing with Kenyans, no matter the threats,” he affirmed.
