Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused the government of sponsoring chaos that erupted during a funeral in Limuru on Thursday, leaving mourners terrified and disrupting the somber occasion.

Speaking to NTV, Gachagua claimed that the police were aware of the planned disruptions but failed to prevent them. He noted the absence of uniformed officers at the heavily attended event despite prior requests from the bereaved family for additional security.

“This is a small area, and the people know the police officers who serve there. They saw them at the funeral in plainclothes, but they did nothing to stop the violence,” Gachagua said.

According to Gachagua, the mourners and the family of the late Erastus Nduati were left to defend for themselves as armed goons stormed the event, wielding stones, iron bars, and machetes.

He claimed the attackers targeted him directly, following him to his car and pelting it with stones.

“This is a very sad state of affairs and a major low for the State, who were clearly complicit in these actions,” Gachagua alleged, adding that he was forced to flee the venue under a hail of projectiles.

Gachagua expressed regret over the traumatic experience endured by the grieving family and mourners, including children.

He accused the government of using intimidation tactics to silence his voice but vowed to continue supporting Kenyans.

“We will not be scared away from standing with Kenyans who need us during their most vulnerable moments. Such incidents should never happen again,” he said.
