President William Ruto has announced a ksh 800 Billion cooperation agreement between the National Government and the Nairobi City County Government to transform Nairobi into a secure city for 4.4 million residents. The statement shared on social media platforms targets service improvements targeting drainage, lighting, water, sanitation, and waste management across the city.

One of the key commitments includes ksh 3.7 Billion which will be used to complete 10,000 unfinished street lights and install 40,000 lights in the capital to enhance visibility. Through Kenya Power, the National government, will invest ksh1.5 billion in both last-mile elecricity and transfrmers in informal settlements. The government also plans to set aside ksh2.1 Billion that will upgrade the Ng’ethu treatment plant. The plant addresses 50 million litres of water daily. An extra Ksh 3 Billion will be diverted towards Gigiri-Shauri Moyo evacuation corridor that will aid in stabilising water supply and access to areas.

The agreement also focuses on sanitation. An amount of Ksh 9 Billion has been set aside to construct two parallel 27-kilometre trunk sewer networks and a ksh 6 billion for a sewer treatment plant that processes 60 million litres of waste water daily. An extra Ksh 3 Billion will support last mile sewer connectivity and ksh 15 Billion will be budgeted for long-term sewer expansion in the capital.

An additional Kshs 8.7 Billion has been set aside for infrastructure upgrades to complete bridges, roaads and drainage systems. The government will further mobilise Ksh1.7 Billion for 59 km of road under phase 2 that will commence on April 2026. An extra Kshs 5 Billion ward-based road improvement programme shall be implemented , an extra Ksh 3.7 Billion shared by the county government and Ksh 1 Billion set aside to upgrade drainage system.

KSH 4 Billion has been set aside to improve solid waste management in addition provision of 100 acres of land for Material Recovery Facilities and the National government contributing an extra amount of Ksh 2 Billion. President William ruto reiterated that the investment is intended to strenghten the position of the capital as a respected African metropolis while ensuring urban infrastructure for residents
