Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) have arrested a former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) staffer accused of forging academic papers in a bid to seek promotion .
In a statement released on Friday morning, EACC said the suspect allegedly presented a fake Bachelor of Arts in Social Studies and Public Administration certificate, purportedly issued by Moi University, while seeking a promotion within the electoral body.
Following the allegations, EACC detectives launched investigations and quickly established that the degree certificate was falsified. According to the Commission, the officer knowingly passed it off as genuine.
After completing the probe, the file was forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who agreed with EACC’s recommendation to press criminal charges.
The suspect was arrested on Wednesday, November 19, and arraigned a day later at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court. He faced multiple charges, including:
- Forgery contrary to Sections 345 and 349 of the Penal Code
- Uttering a false document contrary to Section 353
- Deceiving a principal
He denied all charges and was released on Ksh200,000 cash bail or an alternative bond of Ksh500,000, accompanied by one surety of a similar amount.
EACC used the incident to warn the public against forging academic documents, stressing that it remains committed to protecting integrity within public institutions.
The agency noted that cases of government officials using forged certificates to gain employment or promotions are on the rise.
Just two weeks ago, EACC arrested a Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company employee accused of using a fake KCSE certificate to secure a job and fraudulently pocket Ksh6.2 million in public funds.
EACC says such arrests are part of its broader crackdown on fraudulent academic qualifications in the public service.
