One year after the landmark 56-day doctors’ strike, members of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) are in Mombasa for their Annual Delegates Conference (ADC).
A key focus of this year’s conference, according to KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah, is to assess the progress made on the commitments outlined in the Return-to-Work Formula (RWTF) that ended the strike.
Dr. Atellah has expressed optimism regarding the implementation of these agreements, including the government’s decision to set the intern doctors’ salary at KSh 206,000 per month, as demanded by the union.
He emphasized that this meeting marks the anniversary of a pivotal moment for Kenyan doctors, demonstrating their unity and determination to improve the healthcare system.
Atellah stated that the ADC will serve as a platform to reaffirm ongoing progress in addressing the issues that led to industrial action.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale will preside as the chief guest at the event, which will be held at PrideInn Paradise Beach Hotel & Convention Centre. Unlike previous administrations, KMPDU has highlighted a constructive working relationship with CS Duale, describing him as well-suited to lead the sector.
Atellah noted that Duale’s presence at the ADC underscores the importance of this period and provides an opportunity for meaningful dialogue and collaboration between healthcare professionals and the Ministry of Health as they work together to shape the future of healthcare in Kenya
