The 3rd Kenya Health and Climate Change Conference is currently underway in Machakos County, bringing together government officials, health experts, researchers, and international partners to explore strategies for climate change mitigation and adaptation in Kenya.
The conference was officially opened by Principal Secretary, State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, who highlighted the urgency of addressing climate-related health challenges.
“As Kenya advances toward Universal Health Coverage, we must ensure that our health systems are resilient to the impacts of climate change. The health of our people and the health of our planet are intertwined,” PS Mary Muthoni during her opening remarks.
This year’s theme, “Advancing Global and Regional Health Climate Action – Bridging Research, Policy, and Implementation for Universal Health Coverage,” underscores Kenya’s commitment to integrating climate evidence into health strategies. Muthoni reaffirmed Kenya’s leadership in global climate action, noting.
“Kenya is proud to be one of the first nations to commit to the Global Health Commitments at COP26. We are preparing to launch our Climate Change and Health Strategy to guide our efforts in building a sustainable, low-carbon future.” PS stated.
Kenya is set to launch its Climate Change and Health Strategy (2024-2029), focusing on vulnerability assessments and the development of a National Adaptation Plan.
The event highlighted the collective resolve to create a healthier, more sustainable future.
