Construction of the Mwache Multipurpose Dam in Kwale County has surpassed 90 percent completion, bringing the flagship water project closer to delivering reliable water supplies to communities along Kenya’s Coast.
Water and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Eric Mugaa said the main dam is progressing steadily towards the scheduled commencement of reservoir impoundment following an inspection visit to the project site in Kinango Sub-County.
The 84-metre-high roller-compacted concrete gravity dam has reached approximately 79 metres, with Mugaa directing the project team and contractor to sustain the current momentum and complete the remaining works within the set timelines.
Once completed, the dam will have a storage capacity of up to 136 billion litres and provide approximately 186 million litres of treated clean water daily to households, industries and institutions in Kwale and Mombasa counties.
The project is expected to serve more than 1.6 million residents while strengthening water security, creating employment opportunities, supporting economic growth and enhancing climate resilience.
Mugaa was accompanied by Principal Secretary for Water and Sanitation Julius Korir, Water Secretary Eng. S.A.O. Alima and senior project officials.
