Kirinyaga governor Ann Waiguru

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has intensified the 2027 political conversation, dismissing opposition calls for a one-term presidency and framing President William Ruto as firmly on course for re-election.

Speaking at State House Nairobi on Wednesday during a meeting that brought together national leaders and grassroots representatives from Kirinyaga, Waiguru argued that Kenya’s political history does not favour attempts to unseat incumbents after a single term.

“You failed with Mwai Kibaki and even after a repeat election, you could not stop Uhuru Kenyatta. What makes you think this time will be different?” she posed.

In a pointed attack, the governor continued aiming at Kalonzo Musyoka, questioning the credibility of leaders who have made multiple unsuccessful presidential bids.

But beyond the sharp rhetoric, the meeting revealed a broader political strategy, an aggressive push by the administration to consolidate Mt Kenya support early, even as opposition figures rally around the “wantam” narrative.

Waiguru, who indicated she has held conversations across the political divide, claimed even opposition figures privately acknowledge the uphill task of unseating Ruto.

She told the gathering that the mood on the ground in Kirinyaga is firmly behind the President’s re-election bid.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki used the same platform to dismiss emerging supremacy battles in the region, in an apparent swipe at Rigathi Gachagua over claims of being the Mt Kenya political kingpin.

For his part, Ruto shifted focus to development, outlining ongoing and planned projects in Kirinyaga as part of efforts to anchor political support on delivery.

The engagement is part of a wider series of State House meetings targeting grassroots leaders, signalling an early and structured build-up to the 2027 contest.
