Passengers using the Standard Gauge Railway can expect a better travel experience after Kenya Railways Corporation announced it has started bringing in new passenger coaches.
The move comes after complaints from some travellers, especially those using economy class, who said the coaches were in poor condition. One passenger even compared the seats to timber in a post that sparked reactions online.
As a response, Kenya Railways stated that they have been upgrading their train to include economy coaches for better comfort among others.
Besides the above, the railway firm provided pictures to demonstrate how good the coach would be with better-looking seats akin to those used in the bus industry.
Even though the company could not state when all trains will be upgraded, they indicated that it was an ongoing process with better comfort set to be provided even in the first class and premium sections.
Moreover, in addition to upgrading its passenger trains, the railway firm is working towards extending the railway lines in the country.
The extension, in this case, will start at the Naivasha station through Kisumu to Malaba railway line on the Kenya-Uganda border.
The new railway construction has started recently in March this year and will go through various counties such as Narok, Bomet, Kericho, Kisumu, Kakamega, and Busia.
With this extension being completed, the railway will be connected to Uganda’s line that starts from Kampala.
The extension project is expected to take place in two phases that of Naivasha to Kisumu and from there to Malaba, which will extend over a distance of more than 370 kilometers.
If things continue according to plan, the extension would be completed by June 2027.
According to the officials, the move will form part of efforts geared towards enhancing transportation services in various regions including the Rift Valley, Nyanza, and Western parts of Kenya.
For most passengers, the dream is a simple one; it is about enjoying a comfortable ride on the SGR
