Voter Registration

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has said Kenyans can still register as voters even after the end of the recent registration exercise.

In a statement issued on April 28, IEBC chairperson Erastus Ethekon assured those who missed out during the Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) that they still have a chance to sign up.

He said voter registration will continue at selected points across the country as the commission prepares for the 2027 General Election.

As per IEBC, anyone intending to register can head over to Huduma Centres, IEBC constituencies’ offices, or Customer Experience Centre at Anniversary Towers in Nairobi.

“Voter registration will continue to be done at Huduma Centres, IEBC Customer Experience Centre at Anniversary Towers, and IEBC constituency offices,” the Commission stated.

This announcement has come shortly after IEBC concluded the 30-day exercise for ECVR, held between March 28 to April 28.

During this exercise, the commission registered more than 1.87 million voters. Even though this has been seen as a huge number, it still fell short of reaching the two million target.

The biggest number of new voters was recorded in Nairobi where more than 209,965 people were registered, Kiambu, Nakuru, and Kakamega respectively. However, counties such as Lamu, Isiolo, Mandera, and Nyandarua had low numbers of registration.

The move was necessitated by some complaints received through social media by a handful of Kenyans claiming inability to register within the designated period.

With regard to the coming general elections expected to be held in 2027, IEBC hopes to register at least six million additional voters raising the number to 28 million from the current 22 million.

But IEBC has expressed concerns over many unclaimed national ID cards, warning that some eligible voters could miss out if they do not collect their documents in time.
