Anti-riot police officers were on Wednesday, July 31, deployed at the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party headquarters along Ngong Road after protesters stormed the offices.

In the incident, the supporters of embattled UDA secretary general Cleophas Malala camped at The Hustler’s Plaza affirming his position. Armed with placards, the youth chanted pro-Malala slogans.

This follows another unfortunate incident on Tuesday, July 30, where Malala was kicked out of the position by a faction claiming to be the UDA founder members.

In the occurrence, Joe Khalende, who is a party member, addressed the media announcing that he had taken over as the party secretary general, assuming the position of Malala.

When he visited the party on Wednesday, Khalende was attacked by the protesting goons and sustained a cut on the forehead.

Following the incidents, the UDA party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) convened an emergency meeting on Friday, August 2, to deliberate on the unfortunate and ugly incidents.

Party chairperson Cecily Mbarire regretted the incidents, terming them unfortunate and serious violations of the party constitution and principles.

“UDA party has properly constituted organs and one cannot come and claim himself or herself as a holder of any position without following the due process. We therefore want to condemn that act on Tuesday with the strongest words possible.

“Likewise, we are a party guided by the rule of law. We are a party who have structures of how conflicts are to be resolved and we cannot allow goons to be used to settle disputes. We are likewise taking this very seriously and on Friday after our emergency meeting we will announce the actions to be taken,” said Mbarire who also serves as Embu governor.
