The sudden passing of Roseline Odhiambo Odede, Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), has left the nation in mourning.

Reports indicate that she succumbed to a short illness yesterday.

Colleagues, leaders, professionals, and ordinary Kenyans have described her as a passionate advocate for human rights.

Odede, a respected advocate of the High Court, was appointed Chairperson of KNCHR in December 2021, after serving as vice-chairperson of the Judges and Magistrates Vetting Board.

President William Ruto hailed her as a “formidable human rights champion and a distinguished campaigner for a more equal and fairer society,” while Deputy President Kithure Kindiki described her as “an unapologetic advocate for the rights and freedoms of all.”

Chief Justice Martha Koome, in a statement, paid tribute to Odede’s unwavering commitment to human rights and gender justice.

She also noted that as a Council Member of the National Council on the Administration of Justice, Odede played a key role in fostering inter-agency collaboration and strengthening partnerships among justice sector stakeholders.

Faith Odhiambo, President of the Law Society of Kenya, remembered her as “a level-headed, accommodative, and collaborative partner who always prioritized service to the people and the greater good.”

Lawyer Nelson Havi, who knew her for 26 years, described her as an “intelligent, civil, and sober legal mind.”

Former Chief Justice David Maraga also mourned Odede, recalling their work together on the Police/Prisons/NYS Reforms Taskforce, where she served as a member and Chair of the Legal Committee.

Rarieda Member of Parliament Otiende Omollo praised her as a “strong leader with courage” who will be deeply missed. Similarly, Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma expressed his sorrow, saying, “Oh God, our child! What a loss to the nation!”.

Odede has been praised as a formidable crusader of human rights.

Nairobi County Woman Representative Esther Passaris also expressed her condolences to Odede’s family during this difficult time.
