The Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC) is said to have received fifteen individuals from South America expelled from the United States(U.S) who are said to be from Colombia and Peru where a source at N’djili International Airport told the B.B.C.
The U.S has previously sent deportees to various African nations, such as Ghana, South Sudan, and Swaziland, as part of its immigration enforcement efforts citing its “commitment to end illegal and mass immigration and bolster America’s border security.”
“Their reception, support and care” are being funded by Washington, the Kinshasa government highlighted and that their stay in the country is temporary. They have been granted access to the national territory with short-stay permits in compliance with laws related to the entry and residence of foreigners not providing further details about the deportees.
When information about the deportation agreement was first released earlier this month, the Congolese government announced that the decision to accept so-called third-country migrants- individuals coming from neither their home country nor the destination country- aligns with its commitment to human dignity, protecting migrant rights, and promoting international solidarity.
