Detectives from the Banking Fraud Investigation Unit (BFIU) have arrested a man accused of spending Sh6.7 million that was mistakenly deposited into his bank account.
The event took place on the 18th of November 2025, when the company was making 74 electronic payments, which included Sh72, 000 rent owed to Sitei for its Suswa shop.
Yet, a processing glitch led to Sh6, 744 354 meant for another firm being deposited to Sitei’s account together with the rent money.
When the firm tried to recoup the amount, Sitei is said to have used the money instead of paying back the sum, which was wrongly transferred to him.
Investigations were subsequently launched, and the case forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for assessment.
Upon consideration, the ODPP instructed that Sitei face charges of intentionally withholding an incorrectly paid money under Section 35 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018 and money laundering under the Proceeds of Crime and Money Laundering Act.
Sitei remain in custody as he waits to be arraignment in court.
Meanwhile, The DCI has warned members of the public that money mistakenly deposited into their accounts must be returned, cautioning that deliberately withholding or spending such funds can lead to criminal prosecution.
