President William Ruto has mourned 23 people who died in a tragic road accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, sending condolences to bereaved families and wishing survivors a quick recovery.
In a condolence message, Ruto described the incident at Kanga near Mtito Andei in Makueni County as a painful loss for the affected families and the country.
He expressed sympathy for those who lost their loved ones, praying for strength and comfort as they come to terms with the tragedy.
“This is a painful and devastating loss for the families and for the nation. We share in your grief during this difficult time, and we pray for strength and comfort for the families,” he said. The Head of State also wished those injured in the accident a speedy recovery.
Ruto issues directive on PSV inspections
Following the tragedy, Ruto urged motorists, particularly drivers operating public service vehicles (PSVs), to exercise caution and strictly observe traffic regulations to protect passengers and other road users. He further directed relevant authorities to conduct thorough inspections of public service vehicles to ensure they comply with the required safety standards.
The president said the inspections were necessary to help prevent road accidents and safeguard lives. The accident adds to concerns over road safety along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, a major transport corridor used by private motorists, public service vehicles and heavy commercial trucks.
Ruto’s message comes as calls for responsible driving and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations continue to feature prominently in efforts to reduce road crashes across the country.
