Enziu Bridge

President William Ruto has inspected the construction of the KSh670 million Enziu Bridge in Mwingi Central Constituency, Kitui County, as he continues his development tour of the Ukambani region.

The bridge, which connects Mwingi Central to Mwingi East, is expected to provide a permanent and safer crossing for residents who have endured years of danger caused by heavy rains and flooding. Ruto noted that the crossing had been the site of numerous fatalities, expressing regret over the lives lost as residents attempted to cross the flooded section.

“It is unfortunate that we have lost hundreds of lives at this spot,” he said.

The project is in its final stages of completion and is expected to improve access to schools, hospitals and markets throughout the year. It will also support trade by ensuring communities remain connected during the rainy season.

During his ongoing development tour, Ruto announced that the government was investing KSh2.5 billion to connect 22,000 households in Kitui County to electricity. In Mwingi Central Constituency, he flagged off a KSh50 million Last Mile Electricity Connectivity Project targeting 384 households.

The president added that the government would spend a total of KSh330 million to connect 3,000 households to electricity across the constituency. The electricity programme is expected to expand access to power for households and support economic activities in the area.

The president’s development tour also features affordable housing and student hostels, among other infrastructure projects aimed at improving living conditions and expanding access to essential services. The Enziu Bridge project is particularly significant for communities that depend on the crossing for transport, trade and access to public services.
