NARC leader Martha Karua criticized the Ruto administration for what she called “the reckless dismantling of Kenya’s education system.”
She argued that the government’s new education funding model, imposed without sufficient infrastructure or resources, is jeopardizing the futures of Kenyan children, especially those from low-income backgrounds.
“Ruto’s government is mortgaging the future of our youth,” Karua stated, pointing out that the administration’s refusal to honor collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) with university staff and its disregard for a recent court order suspending the funding scheme are destabilizing public universities and leaving students uncertain about their educational paths.
She condemned the government’s handling of lecturers’ grievances, accusing it of “intimidation and brinkmanship,” which she argued have further deteriorated labor relations in the education sector.
Karua called on the Ruto administration to reinstate the previous funding model until the court resolves the current disputes.
She demanded immediate payment of outstanding capitation funds to universities and HELB loans to students, warning that failing to address these issues could lead to the collapse of Kenya’s educational quality and international reputation.
