A Dandora man has been convicted on five counts after pleading guilty to wrongfully retaining and using Sh250,000 mistakenly transferred to his bank account.
Amos Ochieng was on Monday, October 26 2026 charged in Senior Principal Magistrate’s Court at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and pleaded guilty to the charges. He will remain in custody until his sentence on November 17, 2026.
According to the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the complainant was said to have transferred the said amount of Sh250, 000 to Ochieng’s bank account on September 4 2026 by mistake.
Wilson Airport detectives opened a probe into the transaction and secured a court order allowing a probe into the account of the payee.
It was found that Ochieng had accessed Sh150, 000 in three instalments before the bank cut the access to the rest of the amount.
He was later tracked down by the police in a manhunt and later arrested at his hideout at the Total Petrol Station in Dandora on October 23, 2026.
The DCI reminded Kenyans that Section 35 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act 2018criminalises the intentional withholding of electronic payments delivered erroneously.
The agency urged anyone who receives money mistakenly to notify their bank immediately and follow the official reversal process, warning that receiving an erroneous credit does not grant permission to spend it.
