The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a police officer suspected of being the gunman in the murder of prominent lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu, who was fatally shot along Magadi Road, Nairobi, on September 9, 2025.
In a statement issued on September 24, 2026, the DCI identified the suspect as Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot, following an intensive investigation into the killing.
Detectives also recovered a Ceska pistol that had been issued to Cheruiyot at the time of the incident. The DCI said ballistic examination confirmed that the firearm was used in the shooting that killed Mbobu.
Investigators further identified Inspector Kenneth Sang, who is currently at large, as an alleged coordinator of the operation, reportedly working in liaison with Rose Mbithe, who is in police custody over the murder of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso.
Dr Mutiso was fatally shot in Upper Hill, Nairobi, on July 29, 2026.
The DCI said specialised homicide detectives and forensic experts had worked extensively to reconstruct the circumstances surrounding Mbobu’s killing.
Cheruiyot remains in custody undergoing processing pending arraignment in court.
The DCI said investigations remain active as detectives pursue additional leads to establish the motive, planning and execution of the murder.
It assured the public that all persons suspected of involvement would be pursued and brought before the law.
