A total of 3,772 Kenyans have received certification for skills acquired through work experience and training under the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programme.

The certificate was issued at the first graduation ceremony of RPL held at State House Nairobi by President William Ruto.

Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua said that RPL will be beneficial in helping talented Kenyans to convert work experience into academic qualifications, and to access economic opportunities.

According to Mutua, graduates have skills in construction, electrical work, automotive, and textile technology, leatherwork, hospitality, ICT, and cosmetology, among others.

Mutua said the registration of young people in technical colleges is also on the rise and has grown from 780, 000 learners in 2022 to 1. 3 million.

Also, the government is planning to match skilled Kenyans to work opportunities abroad through the Kazi Majuu programme.

According to CS , 70, 481 Kenyans have so far been assisted to travel abroad for employment, with a target of one million by December 2026.

RPL beneficiaries will be given priority for access to these opportunities overseas while NYOTA will help those taking up entrepreneurship.

The government is promoting the use of the Fundi Locator App by skilled workers to connect with customers and expand their opportunities.

Mutua further revealed that the objective is to enable skills to convert to sustainable livelihoods through paid employment, entrepreneurship, and international opportunities.
