Kenya government has praised the young chess masters representing the country at the Intellect Academy Cup Chess Tournament in Novokuznetsk, Kuzbass, Russia.
Over 30 countries across the globe are participating.
Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi described them as the “The future Kenya’s Grandmasters”
“They are young; they are hugely gifted; they are exceptional and they know their moves!” the PS said.
The team Kenya overcame Russia’s Kuzbass Team in a 11-2 victory that attested to the Kenya’s brilliance and prowess in chess game.
Leading from the front was the Team Captain Floyd Wesonga who inspired his team into securing a dominant 4-0 win; while other team members held the opponents’ captain to a 2-2 draw. The final match ended in a 5-0; giving Kenya a superior victory of 11 points.
Mwangi said the win demonstrated Kenya’s rising prominence as the home of chess masters.
“With every day, we are determined to equip our young chess players with skills to keep conquering; competing, winning and rising to the highest possible levels; that of chess grandmasters” he stated.
