Seniors​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ FC won the first-ever Wamatangi Football Cup after they defeated Butterfly FC of Ruiru 6-5 in a very tight match decided by penalty kicks at the newly built Thigio Stadium in Ndeiya Ward, Limuru Sub-County.

The eagerly awaited game which was the main event of the official opening of Thigio Stadium attracted football fans, local leaders, and community members who came to see a very close match between the two teams.

With neither side able to break the deadlock during the 90 minutes, the win was determined by the penalty shootout and there Seniors FC were successful in winning the historic title.

In their triumph, Seniors FC of Githunguri took home a prize of KSh 500,000, while Butterfly FC, the runners-up, were given KSh 250,000. A team that came third in the competition got KSh 100,000.

What makes the news happier for the community football in the region is that FKF Kiambu Branch received a grant of KSh 2.7 million to facilitate the holding and the continuity of the tournament.

The organizers of the Wamatangi Cup have indicated that the tournament is a vital tool in the identification of talented youth of the region who can then be given exposure and access to the football nurturing opportunities.

The successful staging of the tournament concurrent with the inauguration of Thigio Stadium is a big step in the promotion of sports and youth development in Limuru Sub-County.

Thanks to the great support of the community and the big investment which has already been done, the Wamatangi Cup will be the main event of the local football league in Kiambu County and its grassroots football ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌calendar.
