Prisons Kenya have been crowned champions of the second edition of the National Beach Kabaddi Tournament, known as the Vipingo Beach Kabaddi, held on Saturday at Vipingo Beach in Kilifi County.
The one-day event opened with hosts Vipingo Rhinos falling 29–41 to Tungane, before national league runners-up City Panthers from Kasarani overpowered Tungane 43–30 in Game 2.
In Game 3, the Rhinos endured a second straight defeat, narrowly losing 48–51 to Tide.
Game 4 delivered the day’s biggest showdown — a derby-like clash between City Panthers and Prisons Kenya.
Despite missing star player Owen Mucheru, the Panthers put up a spirited fight but ultimately fell 45–38 to Prisons on technicalities.
The loss was a tough one for the Kasarani outfit but a celebratory moment for the Kiambu County warders.
With the tournament now concluded along the sandy shores of Kilifi County, Prisons Kenya turn their attention to the National Kabaddi League title, a crown that has eluded them after finishing third this season.
Head coach Lawrence Nyadundo says he hopes to bolster both the men’s and women’s teams by promoting Kabaddi within the Prisons Kenya Department, confident that with increased backing, securing the overall national league championship is well within reach.
